Senior Care
Learning From The Wisdom of Our Seniors
In 2012, Plenitud PR launched our “Abus” Senior Care program to address serious unmet needs in one of our most vulnerable communities: seniors living in isolation. Through this program, we are able to cook and deliver fresh, nutritious, vegetarian meals to more than 60 elderly adults in our community every week.
And while we love cooking and sharing nourishing food with others, this program is about so much more than what we can deliver on a plate; it’s about creating a connection with members of our community that are so often neglected. On our weekly visits, we share laughter and fun, connect our seniors to community resources, and receive the wisdom of a lifetime through our relationships with our elders.
Why We Serve Our Seniors
There is a high proportion of older adults in Las Marías compared to the mainland US rate (23.4 % compared to 14% in the mainland US population).
43% of Las Marías residents are experiencing food insecurity. These residents lack access to high quality, fresh food, especially seniors living in isolation.
Seniors in our area are at a higher risk of mortality due to isolation and loneliness. Studies show that loneliness and isolation increase the risk of all-cause mortalities for seniors that live alone, a problem faced by many people in our remote, rural location.
The elders of our community have the wisdom of a lifetime of experience to share. They have spent many years caring for others–and now, it is our turn to care for and learn from them.
“Our town, Las Marías, is full of wisdom. Much of the population is elderly, full of experience and a lot of love, but most live alone and don’t receive a lot of attention.”
