The Importance of Managing Our Water
Plenitud PR’s farm is located in Las Marías, a town in the western-central mountainous region of the island where rain is very abundant. However, even with some of the most intense rain events on record, our farm has not seen any major problems. Why? Our team uses a combination of different passive water management systems that work together with the natural landscape to control runoff and promote water infiltration in the soil.
Building Resiliency with Plenitud PR
After Hurricane María, all of our lives changed - even those of us who practiced rainwater harvesting and had barrels for collecting water for the plants. For my family, my wife and 2 young children, our inverter and a boat battery to generate electricity that we use during the last hurricanes only lasted 1-2 days. This time, the challenge of where to get rainwater or electricity hit hard and made us think outside the box. We should be resilient.
Rainwater harvesting, a response to the water problem in Puerto Rico
After the passings of Hurricane Irma and María in 2017, when large portions of the archipelago were without electricity, telephone, and water services for several months, the collective mentality of the contemporary Puerto Rican people was forever changed.
